Sun protection - Why a daily sun protection factor is the best anti-aging strategy

Applying sunscreen only on summer vacation? Better not. Instead, we recommend applying sunscreen daily, regardless of the weather. Because as wonderful as the sun is, excessive exposure to it damages the skin and promotes premature aging and skin cancer. Fortunately, there's a way you can still enjoy the sun: by using a day cream with built-in sunscreen every day (!). In this blog post, we'll refresh your sunscreen basics and explain why daily sunscreen is the most effective anti-aging strategy.

Why is daily sun protection so important for our skin?

While the sun's rays feel great on your skin, they can lead to premature skin aging, sun allergy, sunburn, and even skin cancer. These are caused by UV-A and UV-B rays, which penetrate our skin and can damage cells.

UV-A radiation accounts for the majority of UV radiation (approximately 95%) and penetrates deep into the skin. There, it damages collagen, which promotes premature skin aging. The skin gradually loses elasticity, and the first wrinkles and dark spots appear.

UV-B rays have shorter wavelengths and don't penetrate the skin as deeply. They contribute to our tanning and thus even boost the skin's natural defenses. However, too high a dose of UV-B radiation leads to sunburn. Furthermore, excessive UV-B radiation can cause lasting damage to our cells. This increases the risk of skin cancer.

The best prevention is to use a sunscreen with integrated sunscreen – every day. Fortunately, there are now very good chemical filters that are both safe and considered coral-friendly. These filters absorb UV radiation and re-emit it as lower-energy heat radiation. This prevents sunburn and premature skin aging.

The advantage of synthetic filters: They usually have a lighter texture, making them more suitable for people with combination, oily, and blemished skin. They also spread more easily and don't leave a white film on the skin.

Daily sun protection – the most effective anti-aging measure

Sunscreen as an anti-aging measure? Of course! Many people are under the misconception that sunscreen is only necessary on summer vacations. In fact, the sun affects our skin year-round – even in cloudy weather. UV-A and UV-B rays penetrate our skin in all weather conditions and cause damage. This damage isn't always immediately visible, but sometimes only becomes apparent years later.

It's important to understand that once wrinkles or dark spots appear, they're very difficult to reduce. The best anti-aging measure is therefore preventative use of sunscreen, starting at a young age.

Those who protect themselves from the sun's harmful effects with a daily SPF throughout their lives can enjoy a healthy, rosy, and plump complexion even as they age. Isn't that motivation enough to reach for a day cream with SPF? Your skin will thank you.

The basics of sun protection

To refresh your memory, we're sharing our sun protection 101 with you so you can accurately estimate how much sunscreen you need and when it's best to head back into the shade!

What is the importance of the sun protection factor?

The sun protection factor (SPF) indicates how much longer we can stay in the sun than we could without sunscreen without damaging our skin. Depending on the skin type, the skin's natural protection time can range from 3 to 90 minutes; the darker the skin tone, the longer the natural protection time. A lighter skin type with natural protection of approximately 10 minutes and a sunscreen with an SPF of 20 can then stay in the sun for a maximum of 20 x 10 minutes = 200 minutes = 3.3 hours without risking sunburn.

How much sunscreen should I apply?

When applying sunscreen, the rule of thumb is: more goes a long way! Unfortunately, most people skimp on the amount. About a teaspoon is ideal for the face. This is the only way to get the full protection (SPF) indicated on your product. After intensive sunbathing or after heavy sweating, the protective film should be refreshed. However, this will not increase the SPF; it will only maintain it.

Do I really need to use sunscreen every day?

Yes, we recommend applying sunscreen or a day cream with built-in SPF every day, regardless of whether the sun is shining. Even when the sky is cloudy, UV rays penetrate our skin. Synthetic filters are most effective when they are fully absorbed. Therefore, it's recommended to apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before sun exposure.

How long does the skin’s own protection last?

To determine your skin type and the associated self-protection time , you can use the following information:

  • Very light complexion, light blue or light green eyes, light blond or reddish hair, freckles and hardly any tanning: Self-protection time approx. 10 minutes
  • Light complexion, light eyes, blond hair, slow tanning: Self-protection time approx. 20 minutes
  • Medium-light complexion, dark blonde or brown hair, slow tanning: Self-protection time approx. 30 minutes
  • Slightly dark complexion, brown or green eyes and dark brown to black hair, fast and intensive tanning: Self-protection time approx. 45 minutes
  • Dark complexion, brown eyes, black hair, intense tan, rare sunburn: Self-protection time approx. 60 minutes
  • Very dark complexion, brown eyes, black hair, fast and intensive tanning, hardly any sunburn: Self-protection time approx. 90 minutes
