Find Your Skin Type: How to Determine It Correctly

More and more people ask themselves: What skin type do I have – and which care really suits me? The key is to first find out your skin type. Because just like with nutrition or clothing, it’s worth knowing what really suits you when it comes to skincare.

What does “skin type” actually mean?

The term “skin type” describes your skin’s natural disposition — how it reacts without skincare products or external influences. Finding out your skin type means recognizing this basic disposition. It is influenced by genetics, environment, and lifestyle habits. Traditionally, the categories are: normal skin, dry skin, oily skin, combination skin, and often sensitive skin as a special form. Just like with clothing or nutrition, your skin type helps determine what truly benefits your skin.

This is what the different skin types look like

Normal skin

  • Even skin tone, without major dry or shiny areas

  • Barely visible pores, balanced complexion

  • Uncomplicated — stays balanced with gentle cleansing and light moisturizing

Dry skin

  • Tightness after cleansing or during the day, possibly fine dryness lines

  • Patchy rough or flaky, appears rather matte

  • Often tolerates richer care, creams with oils or soothing ingredients

Oily skin

  • Shiny T-zone or overall quickly oily skin

  • Visible pores, sometimes dry spots — often prone to blemishes

  • Light, non-greasy products are usually a good choice

Combination skin

  • Different areas: e.g., oily forehead and nose, dry or normal cheeks

  • Skincare routine can be flexible and zone-based

Sensitive / delicate skin

  • Noticeably reacts to external influences such as environment, weather, or strong products

  • Prone to redness or irritation

  • Mild, non-irritating care is usually the most comfortable option

How to find out your skin type yourself

The 30-Minute Method (Easily determine your skin type)

  1. Gently and thoroughly cleanse your face.

  2. Wait 30 minutes – without cream, oil, or makeup.

  3. Then observe in the mirror:

    • Tight → rather dry skin

    • Shiny → rather oily skin

    • Shine + dry spots → combination skin

    • Appears balanced → normal skin

Blotting Paper Method (Quick Skin Type Test)

Press a cosmetic tissue or blotting paper onto different parts of your face:

  • Oil film on the paper → oily skin

  • Hardly any residue → normal or dry skin

  • Different in each area → combination skin

Observing daily life

Pay attention to how your skin feels throughout the day: tightness, shine, fine flaky spots, or reactions to weather and skincare products. All of this helps you assess your skin type more confidently.

Why it’s worth knowing your skin type

When you know your skin type, you can choose skincare products more precisely instead of randomly using anything. This way, your skin gets exactly what it needs without being over- or under-treated. With gentle cleansing, suitable moisturizing, and protection from environmental influences, you lay a solid foundation for healthy, well-cared-for skin.
